Roulette Casinos

The origins of roulette are British.  Roulette can be traced back to  a set of British wheel games, namely Roly-Poly, Reiner and Ace of Hearts.  The French have taken the credit for inventing roulette, However, they just tweaked the rules and gave the game a new name.

Famous Scottish Roulette Players

Scottish casino players love roulette.  We even have a country dance, with a roulette theme – Scottish Roulette.

Sean Connery

Sean Connery won £27,000 in 1963 at Casino de la Vallée, Italy,.  He bet on black 17, 5 spins in a row.  He lost the first 2 spins but won on the next 3.  Now, £27,000 might not sound like a lot.   So, to put it into perspective, a 3 bed semi-detached house cost around £3000 in the south of England in the early 1960s.

James Bond (Sean Connery in Diamonds are Forever)

The game of roulette featured in Diamonds are Forever where Sean Connery (the real James Bond) beats some guy up.  The bad guy was playing blackjack and says to the dealer, “hit me”.  At this point, James Bond grabs the bad guy by the shoulder, turns him around and punches him in the face.

The bad guy falls next to the roulette wheel.  Bond went on to bet on black 17 and won!

Kenneth Mackenzie Clark - The Scot who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo

When a player wins more money than the money at a casino table, this is termed “breaking the bank”.  If a player breaks the bank, the casino must get money from their safe to settle the player’s bets.

Kenneth Mackenzie Clark (the father of Kenneth Clark the author, broadcaster and art historian) was a Scottish industrialist.  After a winning session of roulette in Monte Carlo, he purchased a new golf course at Sospel, which lies in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France.  He went on to build a hotel there.

When the Zero was Banned from Roulette Wheels

The house edge from roulette comes from the zero on the wheel.  Did you know that the House of Lords banned the zero on roulette wheels in 1967?

In December 1967, Scotland Yard informed gambling establishments that hosting a roulette wheel, with a zero on it, was against the law.

Those good times for the roulette player, only lasted a year.  A new Gaming Act in 1968 brought the zero back to the game.
