Bonus Spins

Free, Bonus, Extra or Complimentary Spins?

The UK Gambling Commission is responsible for the widespread use of terms, such as“extra”, “complimentary” and “bonus” spins.

In 2017, the UK Gambling Commission banned the word “Free” for a lot of offers.  Prior to this rule, most offers of “Free Spins” were not free because you had to deposit and wager money to try and get anything from them.

I'm on board with this terminology.  The UK Gambling Commission should have gone a step further and forced online casinos to state the value of the Bonus Spins in the T&C.  You seldom see the value of each Bonus Spin stated in the T&C.  Of course, you could ask support before signing up.

I will refer to all extra spins offers as “Bonus Spins”.  I will let you decide which ones could be called “Free” and which can’t.

4 Categories of Bonus Spins

1.  No Deposit and No Wagering Required

On the list above, the only online casino that offers this deal is BGO.  Are these “Free Spins”?  It’s debatable.

They certainly appear free because you are not wagering your own money.

To obtain these spins, you have to give BGO your mobile number.  You also have to confirm your mobile number.

This means that you have given BGO an advertising lead.  So, in a sense, it is not free, although you can always unsubscribe once you have completed your spins.

3.  Deposit but No Wagering Required on Your Bonus Spins' Winnings

If you were planning on depositing money anyway, these types of spins aren’t costing you anything extra.

For example Guts offer 50 Bonus Spins and the minimum deposit to obtain them is £20.  So, if you were planning on depositing £20 at Guts Casino, you would get the £20 matched deposit + 50 Bonus Spins.

You would have to wager the Deposit Bonus 35x B.  However, you can just play your Bonus Spins and keep any winnings.

4.  Deposit and You must Wager Your Bonus Spins' Winnings

The majority of so-called “Free Spins” offers use to fall into this category.  These types of Bonus Spins cannot be regarded as “free” by any stretch of the imagination.

Winning money with these types of spins is difficult.  Firstly, you have to win with the spins.  Secondly, you have to complete wagering requirements on the winnings.  Thirdly, you have to deposit money and not lose that.

Basically, money you win with your Bonus Spins, counts as bonus money.  The wagering requirements are usually set up such that players are likely to lose this bonus money.

This may seem like a similar set-up to category 2 (where you have the same wagering requirements).

However, there is a big difference.  With category 2 Bonus Spins, you don’t have to deposit and risk your own money.  Although you are unlikely to win any money, it is a free shot at winning money.

With category 4 Bonus Spins, you have to deposit and play with your own money.  This means that these Bonus Spins are not free.  In fact, I am surprised that online casinos have got away with calling such offers “Free Spins” for so long.
